Three Hundred and Eighty Eight Million

From the years 2012 through 2022, the top 20 artworks sold at auction by women totaled $388.08 million. Of these 20 works, 16 of them were paintings: 5 by Georgia O'Keefe, 5 by Joan Mitchell, 3 by Tamara de Lempicka, 1 by Frida Kahlo, 1 by Jenny Saville, and 1 by Agnes Martin. The remaining 4 works were sculptures by Louise Bourgeois. Using the paintings from the list, this series explores the fair use myth that 30% of the original artwork is allowable to use should it be for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research and done so in a transformative fashion. The artworks have been divided into sections and less than 30% of the piece is included back onto the page, diced up pieces put together out of order like a puzzle, with the empty space inviting the viewer to imagine the remaining artwork.
